![]() ![]() AWL was a breath of fresh air, introducing a throwback sound and intertwining it with contemporary R&B. Post-AWL I thought Gambino was just an average artist, but AWL showed me that Gambino was much more than that. Overall I think his rapping is average, and that he is better as an R&B artist. What didn’t impress me about Gambino before was his projects felt a little run-of-the-mill, lacking the uniqueness that separated him from other artists. Camp is my least favorite project by him so far, I just think the album & concept didn't hold together well. While BTI & Kauai show Gambino’s Rap/R&B Style, I don’t think they were as bold, ambitious, and focused as AWL is. Overview- Overall this is easily my favorite project from Gambino, much better than BTI, Kauai, & Camp. The end of the song just cuts off so abruptly, and it makes the song feel unfinished and awkward. The track itself is good, as are the production, hook, & vocals, but the song is too short. Riot- Overall I would have given this an 8, but the ending of the track was what brought this song down a little bit. The Night Me and Your Mama Met- An instrumental track, which is good not only because the album has great production throughout, but because instrumental tracks aren’t appreciated enough. This is further backed up by his live performances of Redbone. Also this songs shows Gambino’s best delivery imo, as his high-pitched vocals are not filtered/edited, showing his vocal range. Redbone- The album’s lead single, & another amazing song. The vocals here were annoying & lackluster here, although the production is good. I definitely thought this track was the weakest link of the album. So much variety in this track, from the flow to the production to the singing, this track shows how great Gambino can be. ![]() I love the vocal variety, & the R&B & Rock influences here. The opening track is my favorite song that Gambino has released so far. Gambino mainly talks about the themes of love, relationships and race here.įavorite Track- Me and Your Mama. Concept- AWL is R&B mixed with Funk, Psychedelic, Rock, & Soul elements. ![]()
